Leaving Homer

After a great visit to Homer it is time to return to McHugh.  Stopped to visit one of our favorite artist, Norman Lowell and his wife, at their studio south of Anchor Point. We first met Normal and Libby Lowell in 1999.  They homesteaded with their children in 1958 (visitors are welcome to also visit their gardens and original cabin).  Once when we stopped and he was not visible, I ask about him and she advised he was in the garden it was time to pull the carrots.  His work is only sold through this gallery.

We were sorry to learn that he now has only 10% vision in one eye.  When he learned he was going to lose his sight he had 13 canvases in progress.  By setting up a special lighting (which Libby said blinded her) he was able to complete all of them.

Some of these wood carvings are his and others are from friends.

But my favorites are his beautiful paintings.

Here is Childs Glacier out of Cordova where we volunteered several summers

When we first saw the “Spirit of the North” a 7 ft. by 14 ft. painting hanging on the rear wall of the new addition to the gallery I found it unbelievable.  This beautiful painting of the northern lights appear to be dancing as they do in the northern winter  skies.

Don’t know the cost of the original but 20” X 36” limited edition prints are on sale for $750.00

When we passed the Ninilchik we stopped to visit our friends P aul and Carol
