Ajo Mountain Dr.

This 21 mile trip through the Ajo Mountains is mostly gravel.  The park provides a van tour several times a week by reservation or you may drive using a guide provided.  On this January trip we elected to go on the van and Roberta (a retired geology professor was our interpretor.)

There is a short hike to the double arches but we observed it from

the parking lot on this trip.IMG_4267-2 arches along route

The organ pipe cactus does not survive further north because of the colder night temperatures.  There are a number of them here in the Monument  and in the sister preserve in old Mexico.  One of the strange growths on the organ pipe (center of plant) and the saguaro (on the top) is the cresting.  No one seems to no why this occurs.
