Quitobaquito Van Trip

A large portion of the Monument is not open to the public except on guided tours.  We took the Quito Van trip to get out to the springs and pond.  In earlier days this area was farmed because of the amount of water available.

The water from the spring at a higher elevation comes to the pond via a gunnite lined channel.

Our naturalist, Sardius, led us up to a headstone.  Was surprised to learn it was not the land owner rather the hired store keeper, Jose Lorenzo Sester.  He was born in France and died here on Feb. 9, 1900 at the age of 74.

Much is said about the security of the border between us and Mexico.  This is a picture of  “fence at our border”.  Note the white highway markers on Mexican Hwy. 2 just the other side of the fence and we are traveling on the sand/gravel road on this side.IMG_4374

These  concrete reinforced post are located 4 feet apart with a cable and board between.  When I asked I was told this was a car fence not a pedestrian fence . . . . so much for security from people wishing to enter the country since this is the only fence in this area.
